fertility acupuncture - Acupuncture to support IVF treatment

More About Fertility Acupuncture & Reflexology FAQs

You may know friends who have had acupuncture or reflexology, some who swear by them and others who tried them once and said it didn’t work or you might still be reluctant to try them yourself as you are just not sure how either of them work!

So how do acupuncture & reflexology work for fertility exactly?

Acupuncture is rooted in science, some of the theory might sound a bit airy fairy but don’t let that put you off. When you insert a needle into an area it activates the local nerves, which then send messages to the brain via the central nervous system. From the brain messages then go out to other systems, such as hormonal and reproductive systems aka your ovaries & uterus! It also affects your immune, digestive and cardiovascular systems amongst others. As acupuncturists our job is to select the points to insert the needles to ask your body to make the change. Your body does the hard work, we just give it a nudge.

Reflexology is a therapy based on the feet, holding a map of the body which acts as mirror as to what is going on with your body. In areas where you may hold physical or emotional tension or have an existing conditions the ‘reflexes’ can become imbalanced. By working on the imbalanced reflexes, we encourage the body and mind to return to a place of balance. With regular treatment we hope to see an improvement in symptoms such as pain or irregular cycles.

How often will I need to come and how many sessions should I expect to have?

As a general guide, we recommend weekly sessions for a minimum of 8-12 weeks, some conditions may need longer treatment periods ie: up to six months and some less frequent.  You will still benefit from fortnightly acupuncture however the overall treatment time may therefore be longer. You can have acupuncture at any point in your cycle as we will adapt the treatment to your cycle stage.

If you have suffered with recurrent miscarriages or unsuccessful IVF treatment or even if you have been trying naturally for some time, then our NOURISH Fertility Method is designed for you. It cover’s a 14 week period and includes acupuncture, reflexology, nutritional and lifestyle guidance, check in zoom calls and integrative functional medicine to get to the root cause of your fertility. It’s a plan that leaves no stone unturned to optimise your fertility, through which we will hold your hand and guide you.

If you are wanting to start acupuncture or reflexology straight away, to run alongside your IVF cycle, then our NOURISH IVF Method is the one for you. The 5 sessions are planned to compliment your IVF cycle.

How much does it cost and what’s included?

All of our package prices can be found here. For our NOURISH Fertility Method and Yin & Pin Fertility you can also pay in two installments. Your initial consultation for both acupuncture and reflexology are a 90 minute appointment. This includes around 30-45 minutes of consultation time, for us to understand your clinical history, followed by the treatment.

Follow up consultations are 60 minutes and online consultations are 90 minutes.

That seems like it will be expensive?

If looking after your health is an investment then looking after your fertility is a gold standard investment! We have helped many women avoid the need for fertility treatment and if you are self funding fertility treatment can be much more expensive than a 12 week course of acupuncture or reflexology. If you are already committed to fertility treatment or have had previous failed cycles then by maximising your chances of this round working, it may mean you save money and more importantly a lot of further heartache. Surely that has to be worth the investment.

What happens if after 12 weeks I am still not pregnant?

We wish we could guarantee a pregnancy for all of our patients but sometimes there is more to be done. If you have purchased our Yin & Pin package for acupuncture or reflexology then it maybe that we recommend our NOURISH Fertility Method for you that includes functional medicine testing, further medical testing or investigations, nutrition and lifestyle guidance, supplements advice and check in calls so we can delve a bit deeper. This is our fully integrated approach.

We can tell you what needs to be checked, where to go and how to go about it. We also work with fertility clinics to get you access to the best in the business no matter what area you need help with.

If we have already been working together more closely then it maybe that we extend the timeframe based on your prognosis or refer you for further diagnostics.

Whatever happens, we don’t believe in taking a ‘stab in the dark’ approach (excuse the acupuncture pun!) and we will make sure that no stone is left unturned when it comes to helping you work out why you are not getting pregnant. Together we will get there!

I am about to start IVF, when is the best time to come for acupuncture or reflexology?

If you are joining us at the same time as starting IVF, then as a guide we recommend having acupuncture or reflexology around the following times in your protocol. However it’s worth remembering, this can change if we feel you would benefit differently as it’s all about maximising your chances! Our NOURISH IVF Method includes 5 acupuncture or reflexology treatments.

Down Regulation (if you are having a long protocol) – One or two treatments, depending on your side effects from meds

Ovarian Stimulation – One or two treatments depending on how your follicles are progressing

Egg Collection – One treatment in the 24 hours after your procedure

Embryo Transfer – One treatment in the 24 hours after your transfer

Two week wait – One or two treatments, depending on how you are feeling

Does acupuncture hurt?

No! It should not be painful and most women relax and have a little ‘acu-nap’ on the couch. Sometimes you may feel a heavy sensation or a dull ache but nothing that stops you from drifting off to the land of nod.

I’m scared of needles though, will I be able to handle it?

I have many women who tell me in advance they are scared of needles and I promise you, not one of them has not enjoyed their first treatment. I always fully explain what’s going on and the needles are in fact very thin and bendy, not like the sort of needles you are thinking of, I can assure you. Once you have that first consultation in the bag you will wonder why you didn’t try it sooner!

If it’s really not for you, then you can mix and match your appointments with reflexology so there is another needle free option!

Who would acupuncture & reflexology not be suitable for?

In short, they are suitable for everyone! However we choose to only work with women or couples that are wanting to come with the end goal of having a healthy pregnancy. This means that you are committed to coming on a regular basis and to taking your fertility seriously, in return we will invest fully in you. We only take on a limited number of patients so that we can do this to the best of our ability. We offer you the space to email us within reasonable hours should you have any questions or concerns. We will engage in open and honest dialogue with you to offer you our knowledge, expertise and resources to help you achieve your longed for family.
